Online Traveller: AVATARA

AVATARA is not a cartoon. It's a documentary about an Internet subculture who spend their lives immersed in an online 3-D voice-chat program called "Digitalspace Traveler." Through a series of 14 interviews, we uncover the history, art, identities, struggles and emotions of this unique internet community who, since as far back as 1996 have mostly devoted their lives to this software.

Drone

Émilie lives in a world of surveillance: her camgirl work; the camera phone lingering on a crush from afar; the headset affording her a drone’s perspective. The same drone that stalks each move she makes, offering inspiration, noting rivals. An unsolicited companion is conspiring with or against her. A financially strapped transplant now living in the Paris suburbs, Émilie is thrust into a high-powered world when she is chosen for a renovation workshop with a prestigious architect. Her classmates come mostly from “filthy rich” backgrounds, like cocky Olivier, who wants Émilie as his conquest. But Émilie has shy eyes only for self-sufficient Mina, whose music builds like a “helicoid.” A drone—unlike any known model—is watching her all along waiting for her next move and paying handily for the privilege.

When Ash, a star player, hears of rumors that a more advanced level of the game exists somewhere, she gives up her loner ways and joins a gang of explorers. During a Zoom call, Jessie (Sheila Houlahan) confesses to her mother Thelma (Ellen McLain) that she plans to commit suicide within the hour. 'Night, Mother' portrays a poignant and haunting picture of the current state of mental health care in America.

This is a 50-minute, independently produced film that consists of 45 one-minute instances, each overflowing into the next in a gushing expression of creativity. Despite deliberately avoiding any explicit structure or object of reference, the film speaks for itself, leading the viewer through an unhinged and chaotic sequence that, despite its absurdity, feel completely relatable. It is a rendering of collective anxiety akin to Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, seeming to present a caricature of our fears out of real footage — to say you feel “as if a Lion is trying to break in your front door” might sound like an idyllic metaphor for your anxiety, but when the metaphor is made out of real footage, the absurdity appears to collapse into a kind of deranged realism. All your most irrational anxieties could well be real; the lion is really at the door.

David Hammons’ singular career covers life in LA during a turbulent 1960s through to his prominence within the global art world today. Key to his work has been an analysis of African American society and its representation within US life. Featuring interviews with eminent artists, curators and critics; a wealth of archival footage; an evocative soundscape by Ramachandra Borcar that includes Marshall Allen, Idris Ackamoor and Shabaka Hutchings; and a reading by The Last Poets member and hip-hop forefather Umar Bin Hassan, The Melt Goes on Forever is a revelatory journey through six decades of art and culture.

Antic Meet

Performed like a series of vaudeville scenes that overlap, Antic Meet consists of ten playful and comedic numbers. The curtains opened with Cunningham moving among the other dancers as a clown-like figure "who falls in love with a society whose rules he doesn't know," and concludes much in the same way, as he attempts to keep up with the dancers, each with their own movements, as they dance diagonally across the stage. Cage provided the musical accompaniment, using a version of Concert for Piano and Orchestra, and Rauschenberg designed the costumes, which included fur coats and parachute dresses over black leotards.
