The American Mall

Xapiri

Xapiri is a Yanomami term that characterizes the shamans, male spirits (xapiri thëpë) and also auxiliary spirits (xapiri pë). Xapiri is an experimental film about Yanomami shamanism that was filmed during a meeting of 37 shamans at the Watoriki Reserve, Roraima, in March of 2011. The film was designed to take into account two different notions of image: those of the Yanomami and ours. Therefore, it does not set out to explain shamanism, its methods or procedures, but to allow different cultures to visualize and feel the way in which the shamans “embody” the spirits, their bodies and voices.

Center Stage

A group of 12 teenagers from various backgrounds enroll at the American Ballet Academy in New York to make it as ballet dancers and each one deals with the problems and stress of training and getting ahead in the world of dance.

DEADHEADS

This project was done with humor, truth, and sarcasm. At the University of California, Santa Cruz, UCSC, where I went to college, there were many fans of The Grateful Dead. They called themselves Deadheads. I had not heard of the band before attending the school. I listened to the music, and I didn't understand why people felt so passionately about the band. I was intrigued. So in 1986, I decided to try and understand these people and the music they loved, and to create a video of my quest. This documentary project is the result. Enjoy.

Utopia Ltd.

Anton Spielmann (18) and his two younger friends Basti Muxfeldt and Jonas Hinnerkort are living in their family homes with their parents in an idyllic village close to Hamburg. The three of them founded the band 1000 Robota. The band has an ambitious aim: „We want to cause creation not to remind of it”, and they want to live up to their ideals. In a society affected by economic pressure 1000 Robota are questioning themselves and others and they don‘t want to meet other people‘s expectations. In a world of excessive supply they are looking for significance and want to unite with others to create a new way of youth culture. But soon they have to face some serious difficulties.

This is one of the first true looks into the life of the notoriously private working class band on the road and at home.

The film features many colorful and diverse performances and highlights the protection of traditional West African cultural traditions and art forms under President Ahmed Sékou Touré.

The concert begins with acoustic instruments; during the course of the show more and more electric elements are added. The mixture of an organic sound and heavier electric elements works fantastically well! The stage setup is interesting, too. There is neither a wall nor a curtain behind the band but a large hall – the band are apparently playing into the backstage area. An interesting quirk.

His father, Roberto, spends most of his time working, which keeps him busy and distant from Pablo's life. Because of his father's emotional absence, Pablo gets involved with friends who introduce him to the world of rock n' roll, and becomes captivated by occultism. His musical talents are evident, and even though Carmen believes in him, rock is something that she will not condone. The pain caused by his father's absence and his mother's rejection of his dreams, incite in this young man a hate which he slowly directs towards Carmen and the religion she professes. Driven by his ambitions of success, Pablo makes a pact with the devil. Carmen does everything she can to re-establish her relationship with her son, and faithful to her beliefs, she prays earnestly for him for more than fourteen years.
