Grateful Dead: Dawn of the Dead - The Grateful Dead and the Rise of the San Francisco Underground

In the mid-1960s a new twist on contemporary rock music emerged out of San Francisco. Known as 'psychedelia', it was pioneered by a close-knit community of local bands who merged traditional American forms such as folk, country, blues and rock & roll with new sounds often developed under the influence of psychedelic drugs. Bound up with the social and cultural changes for which San Francisco was also the focal point, it was a combination that made for a radical re-imaging of youth culture. This film traces the movements, events and sounds of those heady days, and traces the story of the definitive band of the psychedelic age, The Grateful Dead. Giving time too for the involvement of Frisco's other lead players such as Big Brother & The Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, The Charlatans and Quicksilver Messenger Service.

The Ground We Won

With great bawdiness and backbone, a rugby team made up of farmers strive to redeem themselves from a long run of bitter losses. In the face of the hefty demands of farming and fatherhood, the Saturday game becomes the focus of the men’s passions and the ground on which their worth is proved. ‘The Ground We Won’ is a highly authentic, slice of life film about the challenges and joys of manhood, as seen through the rites and rituals of a rural New Zealand rugby club.

A caravan guarded by Roman soldiers comes across a woman bound to a stake and left to die. A wealthy merchant who hired the caravan is against taking The Woman along, but the commander of the soldiers, Verrus, overrules him. Verrus tries to get friendly with her, promising all kinds of wealth for her favors. The caravan encounters a group of Jdean refugees fleeing from King Herod's orders to kill all male children. They are on their way to Egypt with a male child with them. The Merchant begins to ponder the reward that would be paid by the King and orders The Woman to seduce a Roman guard to enable the messenger to get away. When the King's soldiers show up, Verrus refuses to surrender the refugees. Then the sand hits the fan.

Fastball

Since 1912, baseball has been a game obsessed with statistics and speed. Thrown at upwards of 100 miles per hour, a fastball moves too quickly for human cognition and accelerates into the realm of intuition. Fastball is a look at how the game at its highest levels of achievement transcends logic and even skill, becoming the primal struggle for man to control the uncontrollable.

Project Mina

Pro-climber Mina Leslie-Wujastyk is one of the world’s best outdoor boulderers, with multiple ascents of 8a+ and some of the boldest first female ascents in the world such as Careless Torque, 8a under her belt. However, while she could be out on rock enjoying fresh air and success, she chooses to dedicate much of her time to training and competing on the world cup circuit, where she isn’t quite as good. Why? This is what Project Mina tries to work out, creating more than just a climbing film – it’s a story about dedication, struggle, determination and finding your way, exploring the moments in-between the top-outs and trophies we’re so used to seeing.

Well it’s a good thing incredible skiers like Pat Carnick, Karen Huntoon, Tish Green, Bob Burns, Mark Stigmeyer, Dick Dorwith, Scott Miller, Lee Lucas, Gary Holdberg, Pat Bowman, Katie Morning, Wayne Wong, and others decided to hit the slopes so now you can see what it’s like to ski like a pro. Filmed at some of the most historic and oldest ski resorts in the world including Squaw Valley, Vail, Marmot Basin, Mammoth Mountain, Kirkwood Meadows, and the French Alps, Warren Miller’s There Comes a Time reminds us to get out of bed and go skiing.

Thunder and Lightning

The best team never to win the College World Series? It might have been the 1985 Mississippi State Bulldogs, who produced four Major League Baseball All-Stars. Two of them, Bobby Thigpen and Jeff Brantley, became Relievers of the Year, while the other two, Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro, formed the imposing one-two hitting punch known as "Thunder and Lightning." The brash and bold Clark was born in New Orleans, the son of a pool hustler, while the soft-spoken and shy Palmeiro was a son of Cuban immigrants who did his talking at the plate. As teammates at Mississippi State, they nearly propelled the Bulldogs to a College World Series title. Thirty years later, director Rory Karpf revisits those fabled Bulldogs, tracks the complicated relationship between Clark and Palmeiro, and brings closure to men who should be remembered for what they did, and not for what they didn't do.
