A Yiddish World Remembered

Elliott Gould narrates this affectionate look at life in the shtetls of Eastern Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries. "It's unreal that all this could have just disappeared," says Polish native Mariem Adler Stok, one of the seniors whose memories of this "Yiddish world" give this documentary its life. The hour traces Jewish history in Europe and explores Jews' focus on education, their religious customs, clothing, food, music and theater.

The three Cheremiskyi brothers live in the mountains where they don't dream of owning an iPhone7, because to earn half of its price, they have to go to bed at midnight and get up at 3 a.m. all summer long, milk a hundred sheep, make cheese, wash cauldrons... This is the usual daily routine of 9-year-old Sashko Cheremiskyi, who earned as much as 3,000 hryvnias from his "old stall" this summer. But with this money he did not buy a bike or a tablet, but paid shepherds to graze his four sheep, bought a backpack and notebooks for September 1, and donated the rest... to repair the school. His brother Yurko, at 10 years old, bakes bread, cooks borscht and braids his younger sister's hair. The eldest, 12-year-old Vasya, dreams of becoming a reporter or cameraman, but first he wants to see the big city. The three boys don't go to school because they have to chop wood for the winter. Otherwise, their large family will freeze to death...

A moving and powerful documentary about the life of Simona Kossak, a biologist, ecologist and activist known for her efforts to preserve the remnants of natural ecosystems in Poland and for living among the animals in the Białowieża Forest for over 30 years.

Auf der Oder

Documentary reports on the annual icing of the Oder in the 160-kilometer border area between the GDR and the People's Republic of Poland. Icebreakers from both countries with experienced skippers join forces to make the international waterway between Frankfurt and Szczecin navigable again. Everyone works hard as a team and even a broken-down ship cannot stop them from achieving their goal. A look back at the winter of 1947 with its flooding shows what the freezing of the river and the subsequent thaw can do if the ice floes are not drained into the Baltic Sea via Lake Dammsch in good time. The skippers from both countries have known each other for years and trust each other; the camaraderie that has developed on the Oder unites the people, they control the river in winter for the common benefit of all.

Esperanto

This film, directed by Dominique GAUTIER, takes the viewer on a worldwide excursion into the history and structure of the Esperanto language, introducing its present-day speakers. The words of these users of the language are reflective of a variety of activities and viewpoints, and in the film they are interwoven so as to reveal bit by bit how the utopia of its initiator, Ludwig ZAMENHOF, is concretised every day.
