Leonard Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood

In honor of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, Tanglewood—the famed summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra—dedicated its entire 2018 season to the iconic composer, conductor, performer, educator and humanitarian. The festivities culminated on Bernstein’s centennial birthday on August 25, 2018, in a special celebrity-studded gala concert. Directed for the stage by James Darrah, The Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood illuminates the breadth of Bernstein’s incredible life and career, which inspired generations of music lovers around the globe – from his talent as a composer to his generosity in mentoring other composers and musicians, his inimitable role as a driving musical force at Tanglewood for over 50 years and more.

Messiah –The Strange Tale of of Amakusa Shirō– The story takes place in Edo Castle in 1656. Foreign-style painter Yuan Yamada is asked by the young shogun Ietsuna Tokugawa to tell him the truth about the rebellion in the Bizen Shimabara domain 20 years ago. Yuan begins to tell the story of Tokisada (Shiro) Amakusa, the man who stood up for the people and became venerated as a messiah. A beautiful love story that bloomed in Paris and scattered in the Bastille. France at the end of the 18th century, where the populace struggled with poverty and the aristocracy drowned in luxury. After his father was murdered by an aristocrat, Ronan, a farmer, fled to Paris and joined the revolutionaries. He gains passionate friends such as Robespierre, Danton, and Desmoulins, and burns hope for a new era. (Toho 2018)

One Night of Stars The setting is in the middle of the Edo Period during the reign of Yoshimune Tokugawa. He is a free-spirited youth, who slips out of the castle every night and is enchanted by looking at the stars. One summer, on the night of Tanabata (“the Evening of the Seventh”), Kinosuke encounters Sen, a girl from Hotaru Village, and Genta, her friend from childhood. Together, they assemble a turret for observing the stars. From that day onward, Kinosuke, Sen and Genta are friends, transcending social barriers, as they spend long hours every night searching out the stars La Esmeralda A Latin show that unfolds with a boundless emerald sea in the backdrop, portraying passionate love and many dreams.

-- Passion - José and Carmen -- Based on motifs in Mérimée's original work "Carmen," Don José is destined to be at the mercy of Carmen. His attraction to her passion is portrayed in this musical work. -- Apasionado!! III -- Apasionado in Spanish means "hot" or "the passion of man." To the theme of "heat," its various forms are incorporated into this revue, such as in hot rhythms, heated emotions, burning love, and the flames of jealousy. People will gamble their lives in the name of passion. It was performed by Moon Troupe in 2008, led by Sena Jun and in 2009 by Oozora Yuuhi of Cosmos Troupe. A staged piece overflowing with adult atmosphere, a brush-up will be delivered.

Blast!

Brass and percussion blend with dramatic choreography, brilliant lighting and special effects to create a new genre of performance in BLAST! Its performers move constantly, staging intricate movements to classical, symphonic, Broadway and popular music.Taped at the London Apollo Hammersmith Theatre in April 2000, BLAST! musical highlights include Ravel's "Bolero," Copland's "Appalachian Spring," and Chuck Mangione's "Land of Make Believe."

Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey: On Broadway

"On Broadway" featured Carol Channing and Pearl Bailey, both red hot after their respective runs in the smash hit "Hello, Dolly!" on Broadway. The special was filmed on the stage of the Wintergarden Theater in New York and originally aired on ABC in 1969. Together the theatrical legends playfully perform some of their most popular hits, including 'A Little Girl from Little Rock,' 'Little Green Apples,' 'If My Friends Could See Me Now,' and 'Won't You Come Home, Bill Bailey.' Next, they perform an assortment of familiar showtunes including hits from "Guys and Dolls," "The Music Man," "Hello, Dolly!," and "Fiddler on the Roof." "On Broadway" is an entertaining step back in time.

Edmond Dantes, a young sailor from Marseille, is being dragged in chains to the Chateau d'If, a state prison. He protests his innocence, but the jailors laugh and torment him before locking him up in solitary confinement. A few short hours before, Dantes had returned to Marseille from a voyage at sea and been reunited with his fiancée, Mercedes. Her father, Pierre Morrel, promoted Dantes to captain as a wedding gift to the couple. Into the middle of this celebration came the soldiers to arrest Dantes. He is sure he has done nothing that is against the law, and promises Mercedes he will return soon. Then abruptly we realize that the story is being narrated by a bunch of high school kids, who are studying the book "The Count of Monte Cristo" in order to do a play. In their squabblings about dramatic interpretation, the kids summarize the more complicated parts of the story.

All profits will be going to 'Acting for Others', an organisation that provides support to all theatre workers through 14 member charities.
